Applying their geographic knowledge, students discuss current events and news, considering the impact of events on teenage life in different countries and regions. Students read articles to compile information about these issues, and the impact they have on their lives and the lives of their peers in the twenty-first century. Students apply skills in technology and graphic arts to produce presentations that communicate their learning to the class. They will then learn how cartographers and graphic designers use these techniques to represent the basic geographical features in maps and other graphics. Students will put these techniques into action by producing a map of their region including key, scale, the global grid, a compass rose, and icons to identify significant landmarks, geographic features, cities and other key elements.

This product will become one component of their culminating project, Profile of a Global Citizen. Geospatial @ UCLA, in partnership with UCLA Extension, offers a fully online certificate program in geographic information systems (GIS) and technology. This fully-online, one-year certificate program provides a comprehensive introduction to state-of-the-art methods and techniques within the field of geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technology.
Introduction to GIS is a five-credit course, and all others are four credit courses. Courses are credit-bearing and credits are transferrable to any institutions that accept transfer credit from UCLA. Courses can be applied toward the certificate program or may be taken individually. Students combine the research from assignment 2 with the images from assignment 1 to create an infographic. Students self-select a number of researched facts and information to include in an information graphic that clearly communicates a factual reality. It should represent the human perspective of the region in an original, eye-catching form and should represent students’ understanding of how the principles of design influence an audience’s perception (i.e. the power of an image). Students are expected to take the Qualifying Exam before the beginning of the fourth year. The exam focuses on a dissertation prospectus that a student develops with their primary advisor and in consultation with their PhD committee. Each student’s PhD committee consists of at least two members of the Standing Committee and one outside member from another department at the University (and a member of the Faculty Senate). All committees are comprised of at least three members of UCLA Academic Senate.
